AIC Applauds Braun Administration and State Leaders for Providing Gas Tax Relief While Protecting Local Road Funding

The Association of Indiana Counties (AIC) and its affiliate members commend Governor Mike Braun and his administration for taking steps to provide Hoosier taxpayers with relief through a temporary reduction in the state gas tax while also ensuring that local governments remain financially equipped to maintain critical transportation infrastructure.

Indiana's counties and local highway departments recognize the importance of providing families and businesses with relief from rising costs. We appreciate the Braun Administration's commitment to putting money back into the pockets of Hoosiers while simultaneously working with local governments to ensure that road, bridge, and infrastructure projects can continue without interruption.

Equally important, we are grateful that state leaders have taken a collaborative approach to protect local units of government from unintended revenue losses associated with the temporary tax reduction. By establishing a mechanism to replace these revenues, county governments and highway departments can continue planning and delivering transportation improvements with confidence, without fear that needed roadway projects will be delayed, postponed, or canceled.

AIC also extends our sincere thanks to the Indiana State Board of Finance for its efforts to ensure that the necessary budgetary transfers occur in a timely manner. Their work helps guarantee that counties, municipalities, and local transportation agencies receive the resources needed to maintain the roads, bridges, and infrastructure that Hoosiers rely on every day to get to work, school, medical appointments, and other essential destinations.

"Indiana's transportation network is one of our state's most important assets," said David Bottorff, AIC’s Executive Director. "We appreciate the Braun Administration and the Board of Finance for recognizing that taxpayer relief and infrastructure investment do not have to be competing priorities. Through cooperation and thoughtful planning, Indiana can provide immediate savings to Hoosiers while preserving the funding that keeps our local roads and bridges safe and functional."

AIC looks forward to continuing to work with the Governor's office, the Indiana General Assembly, the Board of Finance, and local governments to ensure Indiana's transportation system remains strong, reliable, and ready to meet the needs of communities across the state.
